Few genres have as rich and varied a history as the noble RPG. We love a good, long, talky adventure, preferably with a nice leveling system with a little bit of crafting, alchemy and, if we're especially lucky, a lovely cloth map. But not every RPG is born equal, and games deserving of recognition and success sometimes sink into obscurity. Perhaps they came out at the same time as a blockbuster competitor, perhaps they had flaws that put players off, or just looked ugly. To compliment our list of the best RPGs ever (which some of these games are included in), we've collected a ragtag ensemble of our favorite tales that didn't get enough love. Some are old, some are new, but all are worth installing and enjoying today. If you have any recommendations you'd like to add, share away in the comments.Alpha ProtocolReleased: 2010 | Developer: Obsidian | SteamFor all its clunkiness, Alpha Protocol is the closest we might ever come to Mission Impossible: The RPG. It's Obsidian's take on … [Read more...] about Overlooked RPGs that are worth playing today
Back in the summer of '16 when Pokémon Go first launched, we quickly learned the popular game could lead to accidents of various kinds. The app was updated with warnings and the game was adjusted so that if you were moving to fast (as you would be in a car), Pokémon would not spawn.A study, entitled Death by Pokémon GO, conducted by two American academics, has set out to prove just how much danger the game is responsible for. Based on data from 12,000 road accidents in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, recorded between March 1, 2015 and November 30, 2016, researchers found a sharp increase in accidents over the period, with a jump of 26.5% in a 100 meter radius around Pokéstops.According to them, 31 wounded and 2 dead, as well as nearly 500,000 dollars worth of damage that could be attributed to the augmented reality game over the period in question. These figures, extrapolated to the entire United States, would amount to 145,632 accidents, 29,370 injuries and 256 deaths, … [Read more...] about Report: Pokémon Go responsible for increase in car accidents?
To celebrate BioShock's release ten years ago, here's our 2016 making of what was arguably its best level, Fort Frolic."Being the best at what you do can really take it out of you,” crackles a recorded voice through a speaker system. “So it’s time to unwind! Gamble, shop, take in a show, or meet a new friend, all at Fort Frolic, where the best and brightest celebrate success.” Fort Frolic is the seventh level in the original BioShock. Protagonist Jack is trapped in a neon-lit adult playground by the demented Sander Cohen, who forces him to help in the creation of a macabre work of art. The design of the level was led by Jordan Thomas, whose previous work included Thief: Deadly Shadows’ infamous Shalebridge Cradle, and who would later go on to direct BioShock 2. “I came onto the BioShock team about a year from ship,” says Thomas. “The level was in a fairly skeletal state. And since it was relatively tangential to the core plot, … [Read more...] about The making of Fort Frolic, Bioshock’s most twisted and memorable level

Tim’s stepped back from the brink.Having called Activision CEO Bobby Kotick a “total prick” yesterday, and no doubt witness the Activision response, Double Fine boss Tim Schafer has now claimed the comment was an “accident.” Oh, Tim.“That was an accident,” he told Eurogamer today, speaking at Develop in Brighton. “I was going to change the title of my talk to ‘how to give interviews and remember to check the microphone is off.’“I need to keep my mouth shut,” he said. “It is shocking how you really burn bridges in the industry. You start your own company and you don’t have to work for that jerky boss any more. Not naming names.“Then it’s like Empire Strikes Back – you walk in the room and, ‘Holy shit Darth Vader’s at the table.’ It’s such a small industry, you see the same people over and over again. No-one ever goes away.”Schafer refused to elaborate on … [Read more...] about Schafer: Kotick “prick” comment was an “accident”
