Even with the joke reviews that you see on Steam all the time, a game that’s able to come in at a 95% positive rating on Steam for its review is a good indicator that you’ve got a good game on your hand, especially when you’ve got over 500 reviews for it. Well, the Humble Bundle seems to agree with that logic, as the latest Humble Bundle is focusing on games with overwhelmingly positive ratings. In the first Tier in which you can pay what you want, you start with the underrated Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse (97% positive rating), which is the 3rd game in the Shantae series. It precedes the recent release of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, and fills a good platforming laid-back adventure with fun characters and solid gameplay. Then, you’ve got the overlooked Epic Battle Fantasy 4 (98% positive rating), which is summed up by one quote line in particular: “I shot a nuke at a small bush. 10/10”. The final game is the odd one of the … [Read more...] about [Updated]Newest Humble Bundle Includes Some of the Highest Rated Games on Steam

Jim emailed the other day. “Galactic Hitman appears to be the worst game on Steam, by Steam reviews. Might be worth a look?” The cunning temptress. Of course that’s worth a look. But what to expect? Mediocrity to which people have overreacted? Revenge reviews because the game had a girl in it? Nope. Just a stupendeously dreadful game. I videoed myself playing it from start to finish – in forty-six minutes. And then edited out the filler to halve that length. You can see it in all its glory below.Perhaps when prolific developers Digital Homicide Studios heard the phrase, “a corridor shooter”, they took it rather more literally than most. Galactic Hitman, which does not appear to be a game about a hitman, takes place in a corridor. Oh, okay, I’ll be fair – three variants on a corridor.Enemies don’t move, other than to suggestively wave their hands up and down in front of their groins. Ammo is essentially unlimited, levels are about … [Read more...] about Is Galactic Hitman Really The Worst Game On Steam?
This is the first part in a new series looking at contemporary multiplayer gaming and the e-sports phenomenon.Since Steam’s inception, just a handful of marvellous gems have topped the Steam Stats page. Games like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2 and Sid Meier’s Civilization V have earned accolades, snared players in their thousands, and then hovered around the 50,000 mark. For Valve’s Dota 2, now just wrapping its beta period, that figure currently sits at 500,000 concurrent users (not including China and South Korea). Five hundred thousand! More users play Dota 2 simultaneously than the nine other ranked games combined and it is only going up from there. Why? THE IDEAIn essence, ARTS stands for Arena Real-Time Strategy game, which is a brief description of the elements of this offshoot of the strategy genre. Dota 2 is a team-based multiplayer game that revolves around the concept of tri-lane tug-of-war style gameplay. In short: a team of five players choose specific … [Read more...] about Why Is Dota 2 The Biggest Game On Steam?
Gamers hoping to see Halo titles on Steam are out of luck, at least for now. Responding to a recent report that suggested Halo 3 could come to Valve's virtual store, a Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot that this is not the case. "We currently do not have plans to release any Halo titles on Steam," the company said. Halo 3 data was found in the Steam database recently, suggesting the 2007 Bungie-developed first-person shooter was potentially planned for the PC. Though Microsoft has no plans to release Halo games on Steam at present, it is possible this philosophy could change. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 both are currently available for the PC, though subsequent entries Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4 are currently Xbox 360 exclusives. … [Read more...] about Microsoft not planning to release Halo games on Steam
Over the past month or two, a rift has opened between Valve and frequent publishing partner Electronic Arts over the former's online distribution portal, Steam. The dispute has led to EA pulling Crysis 2 and Dragon Age II from the Steam storefront, and the publisher has also indicated that this fall's blockbuster Battlefield 3 will skip the service as well. For his part, Valve cofounder and managing director Gabe Newell hopes to bring EA back into the fold. Speaking to Develop, Newell said EA's problems with Steam involve "a whole complicated set of issues," but he believes the companies can resolve their differences. Newell also said that it is up to Valve to prove to EA that it is worth selling its games through Steam. "I don’t think Valve can pick just one thing and think the issue would go away if we fixed that," Newell told Develop. "We have to show EA it's a smart decision to have EA games on Steam, and we're going to try to show them that." "I think at the end … [Read more...] about ‘We want EA’s games on Steam’ – Newell
Playerunknown's Battlegrounds has continued to climb the Steam charts since its launch earlier this year, though there was no telling when it would stall out. It recently passed the 800,000 concurrent players mark, leaving it behind only Dota 2. Today, PUBG eclipsed even Valve's hugely popular MOBA game, making it the most-played game on Steam.PUBG today hit a peak of 877,844 players, almost 40,000 more than Dota 2's highest figure for the day. Although Dota 2 has since returned to the top spot in terms of current players (at least of this writing), this is still an incredible accomplishment, given Dota 2's long-term occupation of the No. 1 spot. This is not an all-time record for Steam, as Dota 2 has previously seen more than 1 million players in a single day. At this point, amazingly enough, that seems possible for PUBG--its popularity only continues to grow, and there's no sign of that slowing down. Keep in mind the shooter remains in Early Access, and this only becomes more … [Read more...] about PUBG Becomes The Biggest Game On Steam, Briefly Surpassing Dota 2
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is on a roll; after just hitting 10 million PC sales, it has now surpassed 1 million concurrent players on Steam for the first time.At the time of this writing, PUBG hit a record peak of 1,028,275 players. It far surpassed the number of concurrent players playing Dota 2 (a regular occurrence now), but it's not high enough to snatch the all-time record from the game. Dota 2's all-team peak number of players is 1,295,114 (the highest ever recorded, according to SteamDB), so PUBG still needs to get 200K+ more concurrent players to truly unseat Dota 2 as the reigning multiplayer champion. Its creator, Brendan Greene, is confident that's a likely possibility; he suggested PUBG could hit League of Legend-level success in the future.Keep in mind, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is still in Early Access. Despite that, it's currently way ahead of all the other top 10 games on Steam, include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and it's also coming to Xbox One later this … [Read more...] about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tops 1M Concurrent Players For First Time, Crushing Almost Every Other Game On Steam
Sega Europe announced today that a new Sega Genesis-themed hub — a virtual game room of sorts — is coming to Steam on April 28. It's a new way for classic gaming fans to steep themselves in 16-bit '90s nostalgia, Sega says, and it will be free. More interesting, though, is another Sega announcement: Sega is bringing Steam Workshop support to Genesis and Mega Drive games.Every Sega Genesis game on Steam "will now feature Steam Workshop support allowing you to share modified versions of your favourite retro Sega titles," the company said on its U.K. website. Exactly what that mod support will entail isn't clear, however. Sega community manager Dan Sheridan said on Twitter that the company will reveal those details sometime next week.We do know more about the Sega Mega Drive Classics Hub — which will presumably be called the Sega Genesis Classics Hub, if it comes to North America. It will be a 3D recreation of an early '90s Sega fan's bedroom, "with dynamic … [Read more...] about Sega’s adding official mod support for Sega Genesis games on Steam
Grand Theft Auto V was released on PC yesterday, and if you had any doubt about the popularity of the game, these recent numbers from Steam will make it clear.According to the digital distribution platform's Steam & Game Stats page, over 298,000 people are currently playing GTA V, with today's peak number of players exceeding 300,000. The Oculus Rift has officially launched, and the first units should be arriving at the homes of early adopters today. You can read our full review, and Oculus has just detailed a very important aspect of its business: The hardware will remain open, and developers will be able to sell their Oculus Rift games wherever they'd like."The Oculus platform and store are designed to provide the best VR experience and content, but we also recognize that people will want to use apps that aren’t available on the Oculus platform or in the store," the official blog post states. "As a developer, you don’t have to be in the Oculus Store — you can sell outside, and when you do that you can you use your own IAP if you prefer, and we don’t take a cut. You can also request keys (royalty free) to sell your Oculus PC app on other stores, while making it available to the community through the Oculus platform."This means that if you buy a game on Steam, that developer can … [Read more...] about Oculus confirms devs free to sell Rift games on Steam, other platforms
