Bigben Interactive has today announced that it will release Space Invaders: Invasion Day for the PlayStation 2 in Europe on September 5. The budget-priced game, which is currently in development at Sammy, will see players going up against extraterrestrial invaders that have successfully managed to land in a major city on Earth. Players will assume the role of a young photographer named Ashley, a police officer named Naji, or a leader of a local street kid gang named Justin. Each of the three playable characters will have different attributes, weapons, and paths through the game's story mode, which consists of no less than 50 stages and 10 bosses. In addition to the single-player story mode, Space Invaders: Invasion Day will feature a survival mode in which one or two players can compete for high scores for as long as it takes for their health meter to reach zero. Power-ups in the game will include energy, bombs, and more-powerful weapons, and a version of the original 1978 Taito Space … [Read more...] about Space Invaders: Invasion Day announced

TOKYO--Some of history's oddest collaborations have been the most legendary: Gilbert and Sullivan, Sonny and Cher, peanut butter and jelly. It's no small surprise, then, that one of the most potentially exciting game collaborations we've seen this side of Kingdom Hearts is pretty strange as well. Namco's latest entrant into its most famous, twenty-year-old franchise has been given a strange twist, and it's called Space Invaders vs. Pac-Man. At the mere sound of the title, Space Invaders vs. Pac-Man might send you through the gamut of emotions. At first you might be perplexed as to how it will work; then you might be excited, thinking of all the possibilities that could arise from a game with such a title. You'll probably end up frustrated, since Space Invaders vs. Pac-Man is simply the original Pac-Man game, using Space Invaders aliens instead of ghosts. You might be thinking that this is just a sneaky way to sneak another Pac-Man game into the already Pac-Man-prolific phone market, … [Read more...] about TGS 2005: Space Invaders vs. Pac-Man Hands-On
While Taito was busy showcasing plenty of new titles at its TGS booth this year, a couple of classics being reborn on the Nintendo DS almost stole the limelight. Space Invaders Extreme takes the best of the iconic arcade top-down shooter and reworks it with a few modern tweaks. New weapon upgrades, such as multishot ammunition, flame balls, and lasers, are available. They also randomly float down when killing enemies. Lasers in particular act like the power-up in Arkanoid--another title to get the 2007 Taito treatment--and can rip through entire columns of enemies in a single fell swoop. During the first mission that comprises various types of alien invasion patterns, we entered a bonus stage, which became more of a 1942-style shooter with wave-after-wave of enemies launching themselves at our ship. They attacked in packs, with a special unit in the middle of each small group exploding and taking with it nearby units when destroyed. Bonus levels required you to shoot a … [Read more...] about TGS ’07: Space Invaders Extreme Hands-On
Run – a self-described “series of interlinking segments twisting text into action into strategy” – is admirably eclectic. It begins as a platformer – except with stages made of unabashedly cryptic prose. But then, after you’ve unfolded a few chunks of the sci-fi-tinged tribal tale, Run enters “dream” segments that take the form of – oddly enough – old-school videogames. Impressively, each stage builds these throwbacks on top of each other – so first, it’s just Snake, but before long, you’ll encounter dreams that begin as Scorched Earth, morph into Space Invaders using debris left over from your tank battle, transition into Snake using the remains of both previous games – with Snake’s trail then forming the pathway for a pixelated platformer. Oh, and there’s also a recurring farming level, because why not? So that’s the cool part. Problem is, none of those thing fit particularly … [Read more...] about Run Mixes Space Invaders, Farming, And… Literature?
While the gaming industry is generally focused on the next big thing, there will always be a market for older games and nostalgia-laden trips down memory lane if the Wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade offerings like Discs of Tron and Tempest are any indication. The online store of retailer GameStop might be offering a heads up on the next big retro gaming releases, as the Web site is hosting product pages for Arkanoid on the DS and Space Invaders Extreme on the PlayStation Portable and DS. Originally released in Japan last year, Arkanoid on the DS stays true to the block-breaking gameplay of its predecessors, but with several tweaks to the action. Players could control the game using the system's D pad, touch screen, or a special paddle attachment that plugged into the DS's Game Boy Advance cartridge port. The GameStop listing doesn't mention whether or not the paddle attachment would be included with a US release of the game, but the $19.99 price would be unusually cheap for … [Read more...] about Retail Radar: Arkanoid and Space Invaders Extreme
Although the latest and the greatest games are making the biggest buzz at the Leipzig Games Convention this week, one classic arcade staple is finding itself in the spotlight again, thanks to a controversial piece of art. The installation, Invaders!, juxtaposes an adapted version of Space Invaders against a backdrop featuring the World Trade Center towers destroyed in a September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Created by French-American artist Douglas Edric Stanley, Invaders is at the Games Convention as part of Space Invaders: The Anniversary Show, a 30th anniversary homage to the touchstone Taito game. The exhibit also features an original Space Invaders arcade game and "comprehensive documentation" of the game's historical significance. The Games Convention write-up of Invaders explains a bit of the exhibit's message. "In [Stanley's] interactive large installation, the players must prevent the catastrophe by controlling the well-known cannon at the lower screen border with their bodies … [Read more...] about Space Invaders Leipzig exhibit sparks 9/11 controversy
Space Invaders Extreme for Xbox 360 likes to mess with your eyes. It's full of dirty visual tricks that keep your eyes darting across the screen at a frenzied pace. It's also great fun. The game, which came out on the Nintendo DS and PSP last year is being revamped for Xbox Live and I got a chance to check it out during a visit by producers. I was reasonably familiar with the handheld versions of the game--including playing it on the DS as nature intended it: with the DS paddle controller--but seeing the game's stylized visuals on the big screen brings a whole new level of challenge to the game.Taken piece by piece, SIE isn't all that impressive visually. The enemies are still the basic building-block sprites you'd expect from a proper Space Invaders game. However, toss those enemies together into a slew of different formations, mix them up by color, give them unique behaviors, then toss in a bunch of neon-colored madness occurring everywhere on the screen as you transition from one … [Read more...] about We Just Played Space Invaders Extreme
Arcades may be a thing of the past in the West, but they're apparently just gaining momentum in Hollywood. Following up on news that Missile Command and Asteroids would be heading to the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that the Taito classic Space Invaders has taken the first step toward a feature film adaptation. According to the report, producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker have optioned the rights to make a Space Invaders feature film. While this will be Pritzker's first game-to-film project (her previous credits include last year's Rabbit Hole and 2008's The Spirit), di Bonaventura has reached into the game industry for source material before. He was attached to produce a movie based on the arcade classic Asteroids in 2009 and had a hand in 2005's adaptation of Doom, which made it to theaters but was met with critical approbation. More recently, di Bonaventura has produced the Transformers and G.I. Joe big-screen adaptations. The project is still … [Read more...] about Space Invaders targeting big screen – Report
As part of its campaign against genetically modified ingredients, restaurant Chipotle has launched a new game modeled after the iconic Space Invaders. Chipotle's game is called "Taste Invaders." In the game, you control a burrito instead of ship, shooting missiles at artificial ingredients such as Sodium Alginate and Polysorbate 80. There are even "Additive Mother Ships" in the form of pizza and hamburgers."A galactic battle against artificial ingredients," is the game's tagline. You can play it right now in your browser. This isn't the first time a restaurant has made its own video game. Earlier this year, KFC released an 8-bit-style game called Colonel Quest, challenging players to complete a series of mini-games based on Colonel Sanders' (totally fake) life. Before that, Denny's partnered with Atari, while Burger King made a number of games, including Sneak King. For more on why Chipotle does not use genetically modified ingredients, check out this landing page. What's your Taste … [Read more...] about Play Chipotle’s Anti-GMO Space Invaders-Style Game
