They say that in space, no one can hear you scream. I’m inclined to believe that’s a lie, mostly due to the hail of insults quickly filling up my chat window. I’d be a little pissed off too if my relaxing evening in EVE Online [official site] was just ruined by a roaming gang of thugs, but this foul-mouthed victim is not the first one who has bled at the hands of The New Order of Highsec. He certainly won’t be the last. For over three years, The New Order, or CODE as they are often called, have been laying waste to the safest corners of New Eden, the galaxy of EVE Online. Roaming around in gangs, they find pilots in violation of their sacred New Code of Halaima and exact swift and brutal punishment. At the center of this revolution is one man, the self-proclaimed saviour of high-sec, James 315, and the vision he has for a New Eden reborn by fire. “High-sec is too safe. That’s what it really comes down to,” Root tells me. He has been with CODE … [Read more...] about The New Order Of EVE Online: Meet The Corp On A Crusade To Bring War To Highsec Space
Currently scheduled for release in March, Worms: A Space Oddity marks something of a departure for Team 17's long-running turn-based strategy series. For starters, the worms' seemingly never-ending conflict has now consumed the galaxy and taken on a distinctly sci-fi feel with futuristic weapons and battlegrounds on planets that have different gravity and friction properties. Worms: A Space Oddity also makes full use of the Wii's gesture-based controls and, in a move that you'll probably either love or hate depending on your familiarity with the series, the game's arsenal is much smaller (10 weapons plus a handful of gadgets) but much easier to use effectively than those in previous games. Worms: A Space Oddity has been developed with newcomers to the series in mind, so while basic grenades and bazookas are still in the arsenal (albeit with fancy new sci-fi names), they're now much easier to use effectively, in spite of the gesture-based controls. The reason for this is simply … [Read more...] about Worms: A Space Oddity Hands-On
While the gaming industry is generally focused on the next big thing, there will always be a market for older games and nostalgia-laden trips down memory lane if the Wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade offerings like Discs of Tron and Tempest are any indication. The online store of retailer GameStop might be offering a heads up on the next big retro gaming releases, as the Web site is hosting product pages for Arkanoid on the DS and Space Invaders Extreme on the PlayStation Portable and DS. Originally released in Japan last year, Arkanoid on the DS stays true to the block-breaking gameplay of its predecessors, but with several tweaks to the action. Players could control the game using the system's D pad, touch screen, or a special paddle attachment that plugged into the DS's Game Boy Advance cartridge port. The GameStop listing doesn't mention whether or not the paddle attachment would be included with a US release of the game, but the $19.99 price would be unusually cheap for … [Read more...] about Retail Radar: Arkanoid and Space Invaders Extreme
If Space Marine's vision of the future is anything to go by, then humanity has plenty of bloody battle to look forward to. The game builds on Relic's success of bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to the PC but trades in the long-range distance of its Dawn of War real-time strategy games for an intimate, visceral third-person shooter experience. We recently had the chance to visit the Vancouver campus of the studio, speak with the team behind the title, and get our first solid glimpse at the Space Marine game live and in the flesh. The studio attributes much of the success of its previous games--and indeed the projected success for this latest outing--to a couple of key tenets: its close relationship with Warhammer licence owner Games Workshop and the studio's track record shipping new intellectual property. While Relic is already known as a developer behind quality PC games, to make the rocky transition to console development the studio expanded its team, borrowing core members … [Read more...] about Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Updated Impressions
Every once in a while the great and impenetrable online space opera that is Eve Online breaks into the mainstream — just for an instant — before submerging itself once more into the depths of the internet. Today is one of those days, with a curious bit of conspiracy-laden hearsay that wafted atop the popular r/games subreddit. In short, one Admiral Goberius is being credited with pulling a fast one on Goonswarm, the game's largest player-led coalition, which recently rebranded itself as The Imperium. Specifically, it's claimed by redditor Ohh_Yeah that Goberius tricked Alex "The Mittani" Gianturco, leader of The Imperium, into launching an attack into an empty sector. The post says that 40,000 "bored coalition members" were duped into a massive assault on a vacant lot on the edge of space in the middle of the night."There was no war," writes the brave chronicler, "and when Goons kicked the door in at HORDE's house, nobody was home. There were no assets, no resistance, no … [Read more...] about Did one of Eve Online’s biggest names start an in-game war for personal profit?
Patrick Harris of Minority Media (Papo and Yo) opened his cautionary presentation during Game Developers Conference 2016's virtual reality series with a warning: His talk, on the potential for — and overwhelming effects of — harassment in socially minded VR spaces, could get uncomfortable.Although "viewer discretion" was advised, Harris warned the audience that he wasn't going to shy away from the harsh realities of harassment over the next half hour. The cyberbullying he detailed was both familiar and foreign to much of his listeners, however, making it all the more fascinating — and, in a way, frightening.Harris is a lead game designer at the studio, which is now working on multiplayer VR experiences. Similar to typical online games (he often referenced Dota 2 and Call of Duty), players in massively multiplayer online VR releases will likely be the target of harassment at some point during play, he explained. But what isn't quite apparent yet is the form that … [Read more...] about Online harassment in virtual reality is ‘way, way, way worse’ — but can devs change that?
